Mr. Raed Charafeddine is a director and member of its Executive Board at MMB. He brings a wealth of Investment/Finance/Banking and corporate governance experience through his commercial as well as regulatory and supervisory exposure. In addition, he has a unique experience is in triggering social and economic reform, such as on the economic inclusion, poverty alleviation, women and community empowerment, via private and public financial services. He is also recognized for his extensive network particularly in the Middle East, North and West Africa and the United States.

At MMB, he leads the strategy, formulation and direction setting of the company, advises on business development, serves as the quality assurance partner, and oversees stakeholder management, and CSR activities.

From 2013 to 2016 and them from 2019 to 2021, he was the Executive Board member representing the Levant nations at the Arab Monetary Fund and was involved in high level financial and management transactions. During his tenure as the First Vice-Governor of the Central Bank of Lebanon from March 2009 to March 2019, he holistically combined his knowledge of economics with his education and career in strategic planning and change management. He formulated policy and strategy which have steered Lebanon’s financial sector through extreme adversities created by local and regional political and national security issues. In doing so, he has mitigated risks and provided support to government, ensured international regulatory compliance requirements are met, and facilitated efficient operations of the local financial markets.

In his First Vice-Governor role he was member of the Central Council, the Open Market Committee, and the Reserves’ Investment Committee, chair of the Financial Inclusion Committee, the Information Security Management Committee, and the Islamic Banking Regulatory Committee. Crucially, he overseen the information technology department, focusing on fostering Lebanon’s digital and knowledge economy and was in charge of financial regulation and promotion of financial inclusion.

His distinct breadth and depth of experience and expertise has been recognised in international academia and he is a prolific author and international visiting lecturer on the topics of knowledge economy, financial inclusion and FinTech, economics, Islamic finance, governance, strategy and leadership, Arab countries in transition, civil society, and interfaith dialogue, among others. He lectured at Harvard University, Tufts University, Colombia University, Cornell University in the United States, Institut Européen d’Administration des Affaires (INSEAD), Science Po, and HEC in France, McGill University, the University of Toronto and HEC in Canada, the Graduate Institute Geneva, among others.
